Artist Statement

I present frozen moments that speak towards nature shrinking under our industrial cover.  A robust series that reveals this notion is my  photographic “Grand Jeté” Series. Collaborating with dancers, we meet in spectacular locations to record singular moments.  In flash timing the dancer is suspended in a striking pose before the moment is lost and can no longer be enjoyed in the same fashion.  So too is the landscape recorded in a fleeting moment for enjoyment – it is simply a more profound scale of time.  Climate impact is changing the apex of that jump.  Already three of my major photographic works can no longer be recreated because of natural destruction or man-made construction.  This same theme is explored through other modes in my work. Because the human condition is central, I have returned to my roots of working in the direct arts; hand-drawn images speak to the rare and the precious.  The mechanical yang to the hand-crafted yin is evident in a new series that mines 3D-print technology.  Between the technology and talent on display in a life-size reproduction of a dancer, concepts of reality and fantasy are brought to the fore. With shifting capabilities and desires (and coastlines and borders) it is my goal, with equal parts suspicion and celebration, to present concepts that are both cautionary and uplifting.

About the Exhibition & Artist Presentation

This is the second installment of the traveling show that morphs a bit to become site specific with each new venue. At the invitation of the Tilton School, Philadelphia-based artist Scot J. Wittman is including works from the last iteration in Boston in 2023 and adding new works never seen before. The public opening on April 5 will provide an opportunity for visitors to engage with Wittman’s work and gain insight into his creative process. All are welcome to attend.

The April 5th artist presentation will speak to efforts leading up to the show, behind-the-scenes facts and videos of the life-size human 3D print (and other works), current collaborations, amusing anecdotes, and a preview of the 2026 Princeton Solo Show. There will be time for a brief Q&A session before heading into the adjacent gallery for the Opening. Register for this free event at https://shorturl.at/itpUL.

Tilton School Art Gallery is dedicated to fostering artistic dialogue and education within the school and the wider community. This exhibition exemplifies the gallery’s commitment to showcasing contemporary artists who challenge and inspire.

About the Artist

Scot J. Wittman is a Philadelphia-based artist with an international reach.  The recipient of a National Endowment grant, he has exhibited in the Whitney Biennial, Art|Basel, and numerous galleries in the US and Europe. Wittman has presented at Yale University, given TEDx talks, and is a teacher of teachers. Residencies have allowed him to work with noted bionano engineers and collaborate with famous dancers. His work shines light on climate change impact and the uplifting future of possibility. Recently Wittman has returned to his roots; classically trained as a painter (Leon Golub, Joan Semmel) he has been crafting large and small scale Monsteras & Lilies.  At the same time Wittman continues to explore vanguard technologies and weave them into his production; working with Bionics pioneers he is developing new ways of creating and consuming performance works.  Wittman received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy, holds the office of Dean of Arts at Rutgers Preparatory School, and leads as President of the Independent School Art Instructors Association.
