Building on a Strong Foundation: Innovation with Purpose at Tilton School

As of late, I have been thinking about one of my heroes, Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and recipient of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize. Yunus, a fierce social innovator and father of microfinance, famously observed, “People create culture and culture creates people.” In my short time as a member of the Tilton School community, I have watched this idea come to life.

There is something deeply inspiring about Tilton’s clarity of purpose: to know, support, and challenge our students. Our commitment to four global competencies—relationships, integrity, curiosity, and adaptability—reflects a shared pursuit of excellence and a belief in the potential of each individual, as well as our collective community. These are not simply a set of aspirations; they are foundational to a culture that shapes how we learn, lead, and grow together.

Tilton School has been embracing the future since 1845. To contribute to its present while helping shape its future is both a privilege and a tremendous responsibility in my new role as Assistant Head of School for Strategy and Innovation. My work and our collective focus are grounded in a simple yet evocative question: How can we create the conditions for every student to discover their passions, develop their purpose, and build the skills and confidence to be a changemaker for good?

One of our first opportunities to explore this question came during Opening Days, when our full faculty partnered with HumanSide to cultivate and develop our institutional approach to artificial intelligence. At a time when AI can generate division, uncertainty, and competing perspectives, we chose conversation, collaboration, and shared responsibility. Together, we began developing an AI Stance, rather than a prescriptive AI policy, built on transparency, clarity, and our commitment to academic integrity.

By establishing a common language and clear expectations for how AI can support learning at Tilton, we’ve chosen to center human relationships, empathy, and the intellectual and personal growth of our students. At the same time, we recognize that AI is a tool that we have a responsibility to teach students to use thoughtfully and purposefully—one that can help them save time, extend their thinking, and spark curiosity. I encourage families to review the accompanying Academic Integrity for AI expectations. You can also check out the first draft of our AI Stance to engage your children in conversations about how, when, and whether AI is influencing their learning.

We have adjusted our daily Black & Gold schedule to create personalized pathways for student voice, choice, and discovery. Through hands-on learning and leadership, students have opportunities to shape their experiences during RAMS Community Block, weekly clubs & activities—time that is led by students for students from 9:20–9:50 a.m.—as well as an hour-long Thursday afternoon X-Block for extended eXperiential and eXploration opportunities. We are also bringing back a longstanding and much-beloved tradition at Tilton: Projects Period from March 6–9, 2027. These structures create space for students to pursue questions, explore interests, collaborate with peers, and learn by doing beyond traditional classroom experiences.

If you are familiar with John Dewey, American education icon, you likely know that he argued authentic learning requires teachers to provide real-world experiences rather than relying on passive absorption, strict memorization, or unguided freedom. Dewey posited, “The belief that all genuine education comes about through experience does not mean that all experiences are genuinely or equally educative.” We believe in the power of that axiom. It is important to note that our strategic and innovative approach to education is mission-driven in pursuit of excellence and purpose for every one of our two hundred students. We’ve established systems and structures that elevate Human-Centered Design and experiential learning. From an Honors Capstone Seminar to a planned Class of 2029 trip to Bentley University’s Trading Room, where sophomores will encounter real-world and real-time financial markets and investing, we are expanding opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with authentic and engaging learning experiences.

This work extends well beyond individual programs. We are also developing relationships with higher education institutions throughout New England that share our interest in and investments in entrepreneurship, social innovation, and transformative impact, including Bentley University, Brown University, Bryant University, and Babson College. These connections will help us create meaningful pathways for students to explore emerging interests and envision possibilities for their futures. Several current courses include Introduction to Criminal Justice, Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Economics, Economics of Sports Administration, and Economics of Social Innovation. Future Social Sciences courses may include Economics of Engineering, Economics of Finance and Investing, Economics of the Environment, and Economics of Geopolitical Conflict. These specialized selections of courses will not only enable students to dig deep but also cast a wide net to explore varied interests and hone their expertise. We are also investigating ways to grow our STEAM offerings on the Hill.

Ultimately, innovation at Tilton is not about pursuing what is new for the sake of novelty. It is about being intentional in how we serve our mission, responsive to the changing world, and courageous enough to imagine what is possible. By fostering a culture of empathy, curiosity, and purpose, we can empower our students to become thoughtful contributors and leaders within our community and wider world. To be all in and go beyond takes on a myriad of meanings for each of our community members. As a classmate, teammate, bandmate, castmate, proctor, friend, captain, advisee, and forever Tilton true Ram, our students are poised for new challenges, meaningful experiences, and diverse ways of knowing. It is an honor to be a part of their educational journey.

In closing, I am grateful to be a member of this close-knit community and excited to learn alongside Tilton students, families, colleagues, alumni, and the dedicated Board of Trustees. Together, we have a charge to honor Tilton’s enduring foundation while continuing to build its transformative future—one experience, relationship, and idea at a time. Roll Rams!
