Center for Academic Achievement – Tilton School

The Center for Academic Achievement

Helping students realize their full potential.

The Center for Academic Achievement provides individualized service  for students who require one-on-one or small-group attention. The program goes beyond the extra help available in the academic program.

The Center’s sessions are scheduled as part of the student’s daily schedule. CAA is not a study hall, but school assignments and projects often provide the focus and starting point for skill development and confidence building. The CAA is driven to help students do hard things well through in-person, relationship based learning and educating the whole student by showing up and engaging fully.

Student enrollment in the CAA is based on the recommendation of parents, teachers, advisors, the Dean of Teaching and Learning, the Admissions Committee and the Director of the CAA.

The CAA is staffed with highly qualified faculty to help students learn about their own individual strengths and challenges. Faculty and students set goals, improve skills and habits, and promote student agency.

When I came to Tilton my academic confidence was low and I had no idea how well I could be doing. Because of the CAA, I was able to achieve so much more than I expected."

Our approach is customized to your student.

Prior to a student’s enrollment in the CAA, their learning needs are assessed, and an individualized learning plan is developed with instructional methods that are most effective for their particular learning characteristics. Learning sessions go beyond instruction by empowering students to be advocates for themselves because students who gain and develop a greater understanding of their own needs also gain the confidence needed to recognize their own abilities.

Academic Enrichment

The CAA is a unique setting where students can pursue their passions and interests. Through alternative experiences and learning opportunities, students enrich, expand, and further their growth.

Academic Support

Learning specialists provide academic support in core curriculum content that builds on foundational skills and filling learning gaps through personalized learning plans.

Executive Functioning

Coaching allows students to learn effective strategies for managing time and organizing workload — especially for large projects.

Language Proficiency

Speakers of other languages gain practice and personal instruction in English to develop vocabulary, enhance writing skills, and improve oral communication for presentations.

Peer Tutoring and Drop In Assistance

The CAA helps to support the learning of all students at Tilton School by offering more informal support programs, including the Peer Tutoring program, which is coordinated through the CAA. CAA staff match students who need subject specific tutoring with volunteer peer tutors who have shown strong academic achievement in that subject area. Students meet once or twice a week, depending on need.

The CAA also operates a drop-in support system for students who just have a quick question or need some quick guidance from a faculty member. The CAA is open one period per day, depending on availability of staff, during which a student can drop in for extra help. The drop-in program is meant as temporary, quick support, and does not take the place of any of the specialized programs.

For students who are English speakers of other languages, we offer the Integrated Language Support program specifically designed to develop English language skills, utilizing content classroom curriculum as well as supplemental materials.
